Chemistry and Materials Research at the Interface between Science and Art
A jointly sponsored workshop between The National Science Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
On July 6-7, 2009, NSF and the Mellon Foundation co-sponsored a workshop aimed at examining and improving the state of the science used to study, preserve and protect cultural patrimony.
Program Directors at NSF have expressed interest in learning more about the scientific research agenda of the cultural heritage field, and several of them attended for the day. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has invested heavily in strengthening this field over the past decade and is pleased to be able to partner with NSF in fostering these goals.
The goals of the workshop were to explore the basic scientific questions relating to cultural heritage materials; define priorities for research; frame promising research initiatives that can be implemented in the near and long term; and enhance cross-disciplinary collaborations among scientists in cultural heritage institutions and their peers in academic, national, and industrial laboratories.
